Explore The Best of Austin's Dynamic Literary Scene

Austin has a reputation as one of the coolest cities in the country. Known for their vibrant arts and music scene, there is an endless amount of things to do around the city throughout the year. Often overshadowed, however, are the incredible literary gems that can be found around Austin. For lovers of all things literary, here are a few places and events to explore:

Located downtown, BookPeople is a book lover's paradise. Self-described as "a community bound by books,", BookPeople is an independently owned bookstore that has been in business since 1970. Quirky and offbeat, this charming shop is the ideal spot to spend a few hours to explore its wide range of books, one-of-a-kind gifts or take part in one of their frequent author readings. For those who can't help but linger for hours, there is also a coffee shop onsite to refuel with beverages, pastries, and sandwiches.

Texas Book Festival

Founded in 1995, the Texas Book Festival was started by former First Lady, Laura Bush. Held each fall, this massive event brings together local and national authors as well as fans of all genres of literature. This year's event is being headlined by critically-acclaimed author, John Grisham, as well as a host of other writers. Guests can enjoy a variety of events over the course of the festival including the ever-popular Lit Crawl, a fun evening of drinks and games around the East side of the city.

Austin Poetry Slam

Poetry slams are making a comeback and in Austin, the place to experience one is at the weekly Austin Poetry Slam. Held every Tuesday at the Spider House Ballroom, Austin Poetry Slam is a place for budding poets to showcase their work. Each week, a number of artists are given the opportunity to present their best through spoken word in a round-robin style.
